Kathryn Garner

Artist and Scientist

My interest has always been in visually complex images. In terms of painting, I began with mammalian cells copied from microscope images in biology books, travelled through circuit boards, maps and buildings, and settled for a while on capturing light falling through hair and onto skin. Dissatisfied that I had never understood the microscope images I copied and that I could only see so much on the surface of the skin with the naked eye, I studied biology at evening classes and later at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Now content, I am revisiting cell painting to explore what I have learnt.
